Osoyoos BC

Often referred to as Canada’s desert, Osoyoos have the warmest weather in the whole of Canada. This beautiful small town is located in the southernmost part of Okanagan Valley, between Omak and Penticton. Osoyoos is just a few kilometers from the United States border with Washington.

The name Osoyoos was coined from the word swiws, which means “narrowing of the waters” in the native Okanagan language.

Osoyoos has a population of about 6000 but the figure shoots up during summers because of the influx of tourists from other parts of Canada and across the world. Also, about 800 people live in the Osoyoos Indian Reserve, and about 1800 people are inhabiting Electoral Area A, an area around Osoyoos.

Before Europeans came to the Okanagan Valley, there is evidence that showed that aboriginal people have occupied Osoyoos some thousands of years ago. The first set of Europeans that visited Osoyoos were some fur traders that worked for an American fur company in the 18th century. In the past, the Okanagan Valley was a major fur trade route for Asian and European markets, but it saw an end to it in 1860 when the gold rushes in British Columbia started.

Due to the array of businesses in the Okanagan Valley, a custom house was constructed in Osoyoos in the year 1861, having John Haynes in charge of tax collection. When the railway arrived in 1946, Osoyoos became a village. Four years after becoming a village, Osoyoos was incorporated as a town. After some years, the railway was stopped, and the station house was used to form the Osoyoos Sailing Club.

Agriculture and tourism are the two major mainstays of the local economy of Osoyoos. Although there was evidence that the early settlers of Osoyoos were involved in fruit growing, the first commercial fruit plantation was established in 1907. The popular fruits in this area are apricots, plums, cherries, peaches, apples, pears, and nectarines. In 1920, Osoyoos Orchard Limited was established, and Osoyoos is known to have promoted the earliest fruits in Canada.

There is no doubt that Osoyoos is home to an abundance of fruits because there are several fruit stands and an abundance of commercial orchards encompassing the town. Viticulture is becoming popular every day and most of the orchards are being turned into vineyards, thus making Osoyoos one of the hot spots in Canada for wine production. However, there is an Agricultural Land Reserve at the bottom of the Valley surrounding Osoyoos, thus preventing the use of valuable agricultural lands for other purposes.

In terms of tourism, Osoyoos is blessed with a lot of features that make it one of the best places to spend quality time with your loved ones. Osoyoos has the warmest lake in Canada, and there are a lot of beaches, parks, picnic grounds, and sporting activities.

The climate of Osoyoos is termed semi-arid, having summers that are usually hot and dry. The average annual temperature of Osoyoos is 51.3 oF (10.7 oC), making it one of the warmest temperatures in Canada.

The town is a popular place for retirees looking for a quiet and fun-filled town to stay in The Osoyoos Secondary School is also available to educate children.
